Burning bush

Winged Burning Bush--Euonymus alatus

Description

Winged burning bush is a deciduous shrub standing 5- to 10-feet tall with approximately the same width. It was introduced as a landscaping plant, and it is known as “burning bush” due to its brilliant autumn color. Four-petaled, greenish-yellow flowers form in spring, and their fruits appear in fall as red capsule-shaped berries that split to reveal orange fleshy seeds. Stems are covered in 2- to 4-inch corky wings, which help to identify this species. This shrub can grow in full sun as well as full shade and it is highly adaptable to all growing conditions.

Problem

This shrub can form dense thickets in fields and forest understories that can prevent native species from growing. It produces large numbers of seeds annually, and the seeds are well liked by various bird species, leading to very rapid spread of the species.

Management

Small populations may be controlled by hand pulling. Cutting results in resprouting unless herbicides are used. Glyphosate-based or triclopyr-based herbicides applied as a foliar spray or directly to freshly cut stumps appear to be most effective. Always read and follow the directions on the label when using herbicide.

In Newburyport’s yard waste center, any cuttings should be contained in a brown paper leaf bag with a closed top and placed in the designated location per the attendant or cuttings may disperse and reestablish. You may also call the Sustainability Office at 978/499-0413 to get advice on the best disposal options for invasive plant cuttings.

Funding for this program is provided by the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee through a grant from the Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action Program.
